Airbrush Makeup Phenom

Airbrush makeup is a specific liquid makeup formula applied with an air-operated machine. This type of makeup is sprayed through a wand or pen that is attached to an airbrush compressor. This particular makeup application is largely used in movies, plays, and sitcoms. Now with the emerging HDTV where images are more clearly seen, this is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It is also becoming highly requested for brides since it provides a flawless, even finish over the skin. And because of its longevity (lasts up to 16-20 hours), many women are opting for this. I have attached a before and after picture of a friend I did airbrush makeup for. She was having some difficulty with getting maximum coverage for her acne and breakouts and wanted to try something new. First and foremost, I explained to her that great skin care requires work and consistency on her part but in the meantime, she had a special event that she was attending and she definitely did not need a lecture from me (lol). So I made sure that she was flawless! Let me know what you think.

Throwback Video of the Week

I heard this song on the radio about a month or so ago and it really took me back. I was such a huge Jason Weaver fan along with Usher, Brandy, and the like. Sometimes, I really miss the '90s. Anyway, here is "Love Ambition" by Jason Weaver, 1995.

Special Occasion Makeup... Presidential Style

How can I describe Michelle Obama's Style? To sum it up, I would definitely have to say sophisticated, classy, and simply beautiful. What I like about how Michelle dresses, wears her hair, and wears her makeup is that it is timeless which is a very positive attribute of our new first lady. As years pass, I think we will be able to look back and say, wow, Michelle has always had a very classic look. And that she does. Her hair seems to always stay full, with a lot of body and shine, her clothes fit her form and shape very well without dating her or appearing to be a juvenile, and her makeup is so simple, yet clean and flawless. I have seen many pictures of Michelle and one thing I've noticed about her makeup is that its basis is usually the same with just a change of lip color or a hint of change in her eyeshadow. Michelle's makeup artist, Ingrid Grimes-Myles actually used to be Michelle's neighbor on the South Side of Chicago and they became fast friends. They respect one another personally and professionally. They were friends first who just happens to do Michelle's makeup. I like these kind of relationships when it comes to being in the limelight. The way her makeup is done shows there is more than just a woman being hired to achieve the look, but a friend that respects Michelle's position and gives her a look that is so becoming and appropriate for who Michelle is. Michelle's makeup artist also taught her how to apply her makeup accurately so that she is able to achieve it on her own without having to program her on speed-dial on her phone. Now that's a true makeup artist; one that can teach and allow others to learn the basics of makeup application. To achieve this look: Michelle keeps it quite straight forward with having a basis of well-taken care of skin (cleanser, toner, and moisturizer). She also makes sure that her foundation matches her skin tone. As African-American women, we sometimes struggle finding the right shade because of the many undertones that are found within our skin. Concealer is also important (choose a shade lighter than your foundation and dap a little underneath the eye and in areas you would like to conceal and set with a loose powder). Since Michelle is always on the go and her wardrobe reflects the many combinations needed for a variety occasions, she keeps the lip color and eye shadow pretty natural and focusing on earthtone colors. Michelle also wears minimal to no blush and if she is wearing blush, she sticks with colors within the magenta family which is a perfect color if you have darker skin. To add a more dramatic effect, Michelle's eyes are lined with black right above the lash line. Make sure eyebrows are properly groomed and add a little mascara to your eyelashes and there you have your special occasion makeup presidential style. Check out Michelle's makeup and style during the campaign trail.

So many people walked away with so many emotions and feelings towards this campaign and the victory of Barack and Michelle Obama. What I felt most is that this election brought about a unique sense of togetherness we have not see in quite some time. I also felt that it showed how much family is important and setting a foundation for future generations. There were many couples who supported Barack and Michelle on their journey. I just listed a few of those supporters and also my favorite couples who also exude great family values and simply a love and friendship for one another.

Oh Dr. Miracle....

One of the concerns I get from women is regarding choosing a foundation for their skin that does not cause them to break out, specifically women of color. For some of us, when we look in the mirror we sometimes feel only a miracle can help our faces. The most important thing to remember is that foundation is not only something to use as a cover up but actually a product used to shield the skin from everyday elements we are exposed to on a consistent basis when we walk outside the doors of our homes. I am going to try my best to get down to the nitty gritty in a very condensed yet informative way.

1. Develop a daily skin care regimen and stick to it!- Yes, sometimes we buy the best brands in makeup and we want to wear it often but if you are not cleansing your face in the morning when you wake up and at night before you go to bed, the residue from the makeup stays on our skin thus seeping into our pores causing buildup within the skin follicles thus causing acne and breakouts.

2. Keeping the skin in tip top shape involves a cleanser, exfoliate, toner, and moisturizer- Remember I said earlier that you needed to cleanse your face daily? Well, it's going to take a little more than soap and water sweetie. Bar soaps tend to dry out the skin so it's all about finding the right balance of oil that should remain within the skin. If you're unsure of skin care products to use because you've had some not so good experiences in the past, I suggest Aveda skin care products including the All-Sensitive Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer. These All-Sensitive products will assist with your skin care routine without being too hard on the skin. You can check your local listings to see which salons offer these products and/or purchasing this on http://www.aveda.com/. If you are on a more economical budget, I would suggest skin care products from Iman Cosmetics for women of color. Iman's line of cosmetics and skin care is available at select drugstores and also online.

3. Clean Makeup Brushes- I recommend cleaning makeup brushes after each use to avoid bacteria building up on old makeup residue. If not after each use, definitely no longer than once a week. Also use facial cleanser to clean brushes.

4. Get Adequate Sleep- I know that many of us have very busy lives with obligations inside and outside of our homes but try your best to get 7-8 hours of sleep at night and if at all possible, a 15 minute nap during the day is just enough time to give you an energy boost.

5. Eat Healthy- Many people can interpret this many ways, but please don't starve yourself. Eat in moderation and only when you're hungry. Try to eat three square meals a day (consisting of breakfast, lunch, and dinner with little snacks in between such as an apple, carrots, banana, etc.) Let's please avoid the fried and greasy foods which can "show up" on our skin, excessive red meat and starches.

6. Limit Your Caffeine Consumption- Such as coffee and sodas. Many of us feel that we just need that Starbuck's every morning just to be alive and nice to our co-workers. Well, that is a learned behavior that you can train yourself right out of. Talk with your doctor about things you can drink to aid with those cravings while staying healthy.

7. Exercise- Studies have shown there is indirect evidence between exercising and reducing stress. When you are stressed, naturally your skin is stressed, causing acne to formulate. When you workout, there is increased circulation and delivery of nutrients to skin cells which can aid in getting rid of potentially damaging toxins. So if you workout 30 minutes for three days a week or 15-20 minutes daily, you should begin to see the benefits of the positive changes in your skin.

Now these are great key points to get you started in taking care of your skin, but YOU have to be the one to stick with it. And if you are in your late teens and/or early twenties, you might be able to get away with not taking your skin as seriously but it will begin to catch up with you. As we age, our skin is not as forgiving and just needs a little extra help from us.
FOUNDATION

As for foundation, I personally loooove using Bobbi Brown's Moisture Rich Foundation SPF 15 in Walnut shade. I like how this foundation keeps my skin hydrated without looking oily and shiny and it also provides the coverage I need without looking cakey. With me being a professional makeup artist, my kit is stocked with high-end products. This product alone costs about $42. But I also found another foundation that I liked in Iman Cosmetics and also the Cover Girl Queen Collection. Both of these products provide a variety of shades for women of color at affordable prices (check your local listings). Also make sure that you purchase a foundation that is oil-free.

Now granted, my profile picture and other professional photos I take for advertising purposes are edited for a flawless finish. But when I am taking care of my skin, it is also reflected in pictures that do not include photoshop. And when I apply my foundation to already healthy skin, I get an even tone and excellent coverage. Check it out.

Notorious

I had the opportunity of going to see the movie Notorious, a biopic film of the late Christopher Wallace (aka Notorious B.I.G.). I really enjoyed the film... the choice of actors was definitely a good one and a film worth taking the time to see. For those of us who are familiar with the music genre of hip hop and also the highly publicized "beef" between East and West Coast rappers during the mid '90s, this film definitely took you back. Back to the time when Bad Boy Records exposed the urban culture to glitz and glamour ghetto fabulous style. At that time, bling was referred to as ice and Versace, Gucci, and Prada was something to be attained even though many of us could not afford it. The urban culture began making themselves visible at red carpet events and high fashion runway shows. Many women began trading in their braided extensions for the blonde weave, wanting to emulate Lil' Kim. Men began trading in their black hoodies, fitted caps, and Air Force Ones for Shiny Suits and Stacy Adams. There was much fashion to be seen within this culture and it still is. I came across this picture of Naturi Naughton (former member of the Pop/R&B trio 3LW) who portrays Kimberly (Lil' Kim) Jones in the film. She is seen on the cover of the December 2008 issue of King Magazine. There was definitely a striking resemblance to Lil' Kim and she really brought us into her character on screen as well. Check it out.

And for the ladies, I thought I'd throw in a little Derek Luke who portrays Sean "Puffy" Combs in the film... Enjoy!

Throwback Video of the Week

I thought it would be only befitting for our first throwback song of the week to be "Can't You See" by Total feat. Notorious B.I.G.

Let's Talk Makeup

Great, you made it to my makeup blog! I am so excited about this new venture of mine. As you view my blog, so much will be discussed. Makeup, first and foremost, which is something that I enjoy talking about and sharing as much information as possible. There are so many things that I have learned as a freelance makeup artist that I am excited to share with you on a consistent basis. My ultimate goal is to post new thoughts, ideas, trends, and the dos and don'ts in the world of makeup and fashion. Realistically though, I'm not sure if this will occur daily. Just a little snapshot of me: I am a full-time school social worker, wife, and mommy to a beautiful two and a half little girl who is going on twenty-two (lol). So you know there is always something going on in my life. But I became intrigued with makeup during my college years. I dabbled in it a little here and there but when makeup really took over me was when a college friend of mine was getting married about two years ago and asked me to do her makeup. All of a sudden, I threw myself into it, reading daily and practicing on friends to apply techniques that I had learned. I began to join makeup artist communities and started booking trade shoots to began building a portfolio. I know... I was going a mile a minute but anyone who truly knows me knows that when I put my mind to ANYHING, I do not stop or slow down until I feel my work is up to par and credible. Heck, I was getting a Master's degree in social work when my daughter was only two months old! Yea, I know crazy. So from there I began meeting more professionals in the field and working on my website. Check it out at http://www.angeladleemakeupartistry.com/. I know the name is long, so I'm working on that. In the meantime, we will have a blast talking about makeup tips and tricks, what's in and what's out, things you need to know if you are interested in becoming a freelance makeup artist, makeup hollywood style and also makeup on that "hood" budget, you feel me? So let's just have fun and let's talk makeup! *Peace*
